Spring Is Here. Are You Ready For Summer?

Ah, spring. Days are longer and sunnier, and we all anticipate the first real signs of spring. Here on Martha’s Vineyard that means crocuses popping up and pinkletinks peeping. It also means that summer is coming.

Many people can’t wait for summer–lazy beach days, barbecues, vacation. For those of us living and working and seasonal communities, it’s our busiest time of the year. Right about now you may be thinking,

I can’t believe it’s spring already. I’m not ready for the summer.

Yet now is the time to start setting yourself up for a less-stress summer season. You don’t have to do all the things. You don’t have to work yourself into a frenzy. You can go to the beach, take a walk, spend an hour on your back porch.

Here’s what I do every year around this time:

  1. List everything that I want to accomplish this summer.

  2. Look at the resources I have available to do #1. I include financial resources, additional staff/consultants, and my own time.

  3. Edit #1 based on #2.

  4. Identify one small step I can take in the next week to move myself/my business forward.

  5. List the action steps I can take over the next 30 days.

  6. Write about how I will feel at the end of the summer:  proud of what I’ve done, grateful for the moments I get to enjoy where I live, etc.

I revisit this work every month or so, to make sure I’m not getting too crazy, and am still on track. If you’d like to try some pre-season goal setting, I’ve got a PDF you can download HERE.

A few minutes spent planning and setting realistic expectations now will go a long way to a successful high season. And you may just end the season feeling energized instead of completely worn out.

Drop your ideas and plans into the comments, post them on our Facebook page, or tag us on Instagram. We’d love to support you during this–and every–season.
