Throw Yourself A Party

When was the last time you threw yourself a party?

Those of us who work in nonprofit fundraising can often feel like dial tone. We rarely get recognized for doing the hard (yes, it’s hard) work every damn day to make sure our organizations have the resources they need to do their work.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a fundraising professional recognized as a nonprofit’s Employee of the Year. But if we miss a goal, or an appeal doesn’t go according to plan–all hell breaks loose. So yeah, we are just like dial tone. Did you ever pick up your phone and say, “Wow, that’s really great dial tone?” I didn’t think so.

Yes, we get satisfaction from helping donors achieve their philanthropic goals, and from making sure our organizations achieve milestones of service, expansion, and growth. But no one’s gonna throw us a party, so it’s important that we throw parties for ourselves.

Don’t wait until you’ve reached your goal to be proud of yourself. Be proud of every step you take toward reaching that goal.

Your party doesn’t have to be elaborate. In fact, it can be crazy simple. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Take some time off and get outside:  your favorite hike, sit on the beach, walk around the block.

  • Go out to lunch at that new place you’ve been wanting to try:  Invite friends, or make it a solo celebration.

  • Treat yourself:  to flowers, a great glass of wine, or the latest pastry craze (at the moment, it’s the Crookie).

Basically, just do something that makes you feel special and rewarded for a job well done. Because you deserve it. Add your ideas in the comments…you never know who you’ll inspire!
